I’ve always been interested in whitewater kayaking and now I’ve finally decided to take it seriously and get into big time. I don’t really know much about the equipment and things needed, so I figured I would just post this and see what some you people have to say. I was planning on treating myself to a new kayak for my birthday that’s coming up soon (March 12 YAY!!) so I was just wondering what brands and what materials should I be searching for with the new kayak. Basically, I just need any info that can be given to a beginner. Thanks in advance guys :]

I’d like to rent one of those open-topped kayaks for the week when I’m down vacationing in the Outer Banks, but I’ve only been kayaking once (took a couple hour lesson on Lake Erie). (I own a canoe and have canoed quite a bit.) I’d probably stay on the Sound side of the islands most of the time (interested in birdwatching and wildlife viewing), which I would guess is pretty calm vs. going in the ocean. Just wondering if it’s a really stupid idea to do this type of thing by yourself when you only have limited experience.

firstly, thank you cpt john.
secondly, there are no sharks that will eat me, the water stays flat all day (hot sunny day) with no “big massive waves or swirls” and i will hardly “drift” to france or the azores, although that does have its benefits.
these are “guessing” answers you have given, please only answer if you actually know the answer.
